the tide shifts the sand is an ongoing series of pictures taken along the British coast. Often strange and mysterious, there is an otherworldly undertone in many of the surrounding towns. Notions of the sublime evoked by the sea merge with the history of buildings and seafront, attitude and people. The past seems to linger as if they’ve been forgotten, left behind.
I’m drawn to these places because they seem to evoke in me a sense of what may have been lost in my own history, what stays present somewhere in my subconscious but remains unclear. There is an eerie sense of familiarity and nostalgia I feel when I’m near the sea that brings forth a longing and a searching. As I journey along the coast I ask - are these memories real or imagined? Am I remembering stories I’ve been told, feeling that which is buried in our collective consciousness, or is something more innate at play?
